Alan and his good friend DJ discuss the need for new IP in the entertainment industry, the improvement of video game movies over time, some quick thoughts on The Creator, and the movies and TV shows to be excited for in 2024.
In the following excerpt, Alan and DJ discuss a few movies they’re most looking forward to seeing in 2024.
DJ: So, what are you looking forward to in 2024 coming up?
Alan: Yeah, for sure. Well, for me, what I’m looking forward to, at the top of the list has to be Dune, pt. 2.
DJ: Oh yeah.
Alan: That was an easy one… [laughs] that one required no research. When we were talking about doing this, I was like ‘okay, well I know Dune, pt. 2 was going to be at the top of the list. Easy, so. Yeah, just seeing the second part, having been delayed unfortunately from the end of last year—probably due in part to I think the actor’s strike—it’s just going to be good to see the completion of the story.
I really love that it’s a duology. I really love that it’s ‘part one, part two, here we go.’ I can’t wait to see the second part, even though we know how the story ends, assuming they’ll follow closely to the book which it certainly seems like they’re doing. But, just to see how they pull that off, just to see some of the cool interactions in the story. Paul Atreides coming into the Fremen, winning their respect, [and] striking back against the Harkonnens and [the Emperor].
I’m really excited to see that because the first [part of] Dune was great, so well done, but it really did feel like a part one. And I think that, okay, part of the excitement for seeing part two is just like, I can’t wait for them to bring those two halves together in a whole. I think it will really feel very satisfying and cohesive, especially when you have parts one and two and you can watch them close together and it’s like ‘alright, I’m getting the full story here.’ They took their time, spreading it out over two parts which I think was smart. And yeah, I’m just excited to see them pull it off.
DJ: Man, I … [laughs] … I’m over the moon for Dune, part 2. I think the first one, for me personally, is one of those very few films in a lifetime for me—or pieces of any media—that transcended the media it was in and is just beautiful art in every category. It’s transcendent to me. So good. It does also help that it’s very visually driven, which is to its strength, it’s a visual media. So, yeah. Just excellent. I knew we were gonna have a lot of similarities on our lists.
Alan: For sure. Dune is gonna be great. I have, really, all the faith in the world that they’re going to stick the landing based on the tools they’re working with. All of the actors in it have been spot on. You and I have joked about ‘Christopher Walken, Emperor’ … [DJ laughs] … but I’m sure that will be enjoyable in its own way, too.
DJ: [Christopher Walken voice] I got a fever, and the only prescription is more spice!
Alan: [laughs] … Exactly. So, what else is something on your list?
DJ: Man, right up there with Dune is Furiosa. For sure. I know it only happens a few times in a lifetime—this is one of the other instances—Mad Max: Fury Road. That is one of the four or five films I play on repeat around here. Dune being one of the other ones. I am so effin’ excited for Furiosa. I’m really interested to see how they handle … [laughs] … how do you follow that up? Same with Dune 2, like, man you’ve got some really big shoes to fill. Thankfully, it’s the same feet. I’m really excited to see, because after watching the trailer several times … I’ve noticed more and more things and picked up on things. I’m really excited to see, like, we’re really getting to live in that world that was [established in Fury Road].
The world [of Mad Max has] been established for decades, but the world that Fury Road established with the hyper-local, the Citadel, Gas Town, Bullet Farm, and that sort of little kingdom in the middle of the apocalypse. We’re gonna get to see more of that place, but fifteen years removed from when [the character of Furiosa] was a middle-years, late-teens or whatever the character is supposed to be in the upcoming movie. I’m really excited to see that because it’s different than what it was in Fury Road.
